Xie Yanyi is a Beijing human rights lawyer who has represented various human rights cases. In 2003, he sued against Jiang Zemin, being the Chairman of the State Central Military Commission at that time, for violating the Constitution and manipulating election to continue to serve as the Chairman. In 2008, he published the research “Peaceful Democratic Movements” to advocate the concepts of peace and democracy. In 2015, Xie Yanyi was detained in 709 Crackdown for the alleged crime of "inciting subversion of state power" and "disrupting court order". After more than a year of detention, he was released on bail pending trial in 2017.
