Detained pending for trial
Wang Quanzhang graduated from Shandong University School of Law in 2000. In 1999, he began paying attention to issues related to Falun Gong and began providing legal aid services to persecuted Falun Gong members while still in school. As a result, he was warned by relevant government departments. In Jinan’s Yin Jialing neighborhood in Shandong Province, he served as a law instructor and provided a course on farmer land rights. Later, he cooperated with a Beijing human rights organization and provided legal services to defendants. He also handled cases including the one of a Guangdong civil rights activist who was blackmailed. Later, he received pressure from the authorities and was forced to quit his law-related work. At the same time, he assisted a foreign TV station’s interview about sensitive cases in China.
Later, Wang Quanzhang used the penname “Gao Feng”(Peak) to publish ten articles criticizing the government on the internet. In 2008, his house was searched and his possessions confiscated by the Ministry of State Security. Subsequently, he left Shandong and started working at the World and China Institute. During that time, he participated in a writer’s event regarding the internet and citizens, and an observation report regarding the role of lawyers in the freedom and civil rights movements.
In April 2013, Wang was detained by the Jiangsu Jingjiang Court for 10 days when he was defending for the Falun Gong practitioner Zhu Yanian. The incident led to a joint statement signed by over 100 lawyers to request for the court videos and his release. It has also triggered wide report from both Chinese and Western media. Thus, Wang was released after 3 days.
On 28th March, 2014, Wang Quanzhang went to Jiamusi, Heilongjiang to support the lawyers who were persecuted by the detention centre in the Jiansanjiang Incident. The police there forced him to sign on a guarantee and tortured him by grabbing his hair and pushing him to the wall as well as hitting the back of his head.
